Last week I was in caregiver mode full force again. Evan had a cold (coarse cough, runny
nose) and ear infection. For me, this translates into sleepless nights filled with breathing treatments and
days filled with catering to his needs at home.
By the end of the week I could feel a familiar feeling of
uneasiness building inside of myself.
I was tired from getting a lot less sleep than I needed, depleted from
catering to his many needs, and anxious for putting off other work that needed
to get done.
So I sent myself to my rejuvenation corner for a time out.
I have discovered if I take time to refocus and rejuvenate,
then I will be able to continue giving to others. About a year ago I made myself a rejuvenation corner with a
cozy chair, a view outside to my yard, a collection of inspirational reading
materials, relaxation music, and aromatherapy.
Here is my “to the rejuvenation corner” routine.
- Start drinking a big glass of water. Hydration fixes a lot all by itself.
- Turn on my aromatherapy – this time I used peppermint oil to energize myself. (check out this company for some high quality essential oils) http://www.bonvital.com/shop/aromatherapy-30/
- Turn on my favorite relaxation CD – Acoustic Garden by Eric Tingstad & Nancy Rumbel (another favorite CD by these artists is Emerald)
- Take a piece a paper and wrote down the items on “to do” list that didn’t get done this week. Try to pin point any chores that are really weighing on my mind. Know that everything on the list is doable, in time. Put the list out of sight and out of mind.
- Take some deep breaths and let everything in my mind and body settle during the deep breathing.
- Pick up an inspirational book, let it open where it will, and read a page or two. Ponder the message and relax until I feel better. If I have time I might read several books.
- When inspired to move into action, I choose something from my to-do list and do it. Or I might just spend some time enjoying being with my family.
I hope that everybody reading this will create a rejuvenation
corner for yourself and visit it whenever you need to. If you have favorite books or
recordings, please share titles in the comments. Happy rejuvenating!
